Red Lady Papaya has a high yield of fruit that's similar but sweeter and tastier than the variety you can buy at the grocery store. The flavor resembles melons. Red Lady often starts to fruit when it reaches just 4-feet tall. Not sure if your fruit is ripe yet? Just let it stay on the tree until about a third of the skin changes color and then pull it off to ripen at room temperature. Like bananas, papayas get sweeter as they ripen. This papaya is self-fertile.

We sell baby plants

Wellspring Gardens is the starter plant, AKA “baby plant” shop. We just get you started, so you get all the credit for raising your plants under your green thumb.

How tall are baby plants?

We aim to ship your plants when they’re 3-8” tall, though we often ship them taller than that.

What determines whether I get a 3-, 6-, or even 18-inch-tall plant?

The exact size of the plant we send you is variable on the time of year and how long we've been growing it out.

Happy little tree

Looks healthy and happy despite the two leaves that were yellowing when I unpacked it. Just now slowly exposing it to direct sunlight. Excited to see a tiny new leaf coming out.

When it arrived it was defoliated. I did see some dead leaves in the box. I think it can still recover though.

The plants arrived a little scraggly from shipping (it is HOT here), but as soon as I watered them and let them rest under a covered porch, they leafed out immediately. Thank you!
