Thailand Giant baby quadruples in size in just 4 weeks: Plant parent chronicle

Thailand Giant baby quadruples in size in just 4 weeks: Plant parent chronicle

One of our loyal customers, Bradley E. Watson, bought a baby Thailand Giant Elephant Ear from us and has watched it quadruple in size in just 1 month. Not only did he save a big chunk of change on shipping and the plant itself by purchasing a baby plant from us, he has also gotten the satisfaction of watching it grow up under his own care. Bradley was kind enough to share his plant's growth progress with us.

After Arrival

Shortly after arrival, Bradley repotted the Thailand Giant he bought from us into a larger pot.

Week 1

At the end of its first week it grew a new leaf and no longer drooped.

Week 2

The second week is when it took off and grew a massive leaf nearly 4 times bigger than the first.

Week 3

By the end of week 3, his elephant ear put a new leaf out every other day, and each one was nearly 3-4 times bigger than the last.

Week 4

The Thailand Giant's growth began to level out, but it is still putting out a new, larger leaf at least every few days. The leaves come out so fast that the previous leaf doesn't even have time to uncurl before another starts to emerge.

Week 5

This giant can grow up to 10-feet-tall. It's well on its way and we're excited to watch it continue growing!

Thanks for sharing your baby giant's success story with us, Bradley. Now that's what we call happy planting here at Wellspring Gardens!

This Just In: Sept. 25 Update

@Catherine: Nice job keeping a Thai Giant thriving in Chicago! Deer typically avoid Colocasia leaves; the leaves irritate their mouth tissue. Deer may even avoid gardens with Colocasias.

We always prefer natural solutions to pest management. First try oil — Neem, preferably, or vegetable — mixed with water, and spray your plant down. Afterward, spray the plant off with plain water.

Let us know how this works for you!

We gifted a Thailand Giant to our neighbor 3 houses down and planted it in full sun this past May in a plastic whiskey barrel planter. Watered daily and given a 20-20-20 fertilizer once or twice monthly. It’s huge! We can see it from our house. But, some sort of insect(s) found it to its liking – has eaten numerous larges holes in the leaves. What advice to address this? And, do deer eat the leaves? We live in the Chicago area.

Great question, Bill! Thailand Giants thrive in full to part sun. See if moving yours makes a difference. You can also fertilize to encourage more rapid growth.

I wish mine grew that fast. It looks like it’s in full sun. Can these elephant ears handle full sun? I keep mine in filtered shade under a big tree.
