The name "Allspice" was coined by the English because it encompasses all the most aromatic spices: cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. You may have already used the Pimenta dioica berries in your favorite recipes, but did you know the leaves can also be used? Native to Central America and the Caribbean Islands, Allspice was discovered by Christopher Columbus, who mistook it for black pepper, and it became "Pimenta" from the Spanish word for Pepper.
The Allspice is a slow-growing tree with beautiful white flowers. It makes a great houseplant in freezing climates and a great outdoor plant in warmer zones. Established plants can withstand temperatures up to 28 degrees Fahrenheit.
