You may have thought growing avocados was only a reality if you lived in a tropical paradise, but we've hand-picked the most cold-hardy and desirable varieties so you can make growing avocados a reality in your home garden. Winter Mexican has good cold tolerance, withstanding temperatures down to 20-22 degrees Fahrenheit. It's a self-fertile Type-A avocado, but planting at least one B-type (such as Fantastic or Joey) will increase your yield and will provide you with a harvest throughout a larger part of the year. In fact, what really sets apart the Winter Mexican Avocado Tree is that it continues fruiting into winter (November to January) when most other varieties are finished. Winter Mexican produces small fruit (6 to 12 ounces) with a rich flavor. This variety does best when planted in the ground rather than in a container.
