Each Wednesday we drop a new, rarer plant that we've grown out larger than our typical starter plant size. This week, we have 15 Pond Apple Trees.

The pond apple (Annona glabra) is a tropical fruit tree native to wetlands and mangrove swamps across the Americas, known for its glossy green leaves, pale yellow flowers, and distinctive buoyant fruits that can float and disperse along waterways. Often called “alligator apple,” it thrives in soggy, flood-prone soils where few other trees can survive, providing valuable habitat and erosion control. Hardy, salt-tolerant, and resilient, the pond apple is both an important ecological species and a fascinating member of the custard apple family.

Wildlife loves the fruit when it's still green. Humans prefer it once it's turned solidly yellow.
  • Average mature height: 15-30 feet
  • Light: Full sun–part shade
  • Soil: Prefers wet to moist soils and can tolerate soils that are poorly-drained or even periodically flooded.
  • Zones: 10-12
