The fruit of the Cape Gooseberry is smooth, resembling an orange or yellow cherry tomato. When it is removed from its calyx, (a paper lantern-like covering) it is about 3/4 inches in diameter. When ripe, it is sweet with a mildly tart flavor perfect for use in jams, preserves, and salads. The Cape Gooseberry is related to the tomato and its cultivation is similar to tomatoes. Grow this as an annual. In mild climates, (without freezing temperatures) it can live longer than a year.
