Alpinia zerumbet. The outstanding foliage of this dramatic ginger grows to 4 feet high. Very easy ginger to grow with upright habit and sturdy stems that need no staking. Called a shell ginger or shell flower because its individual pink flowers when in bud, resemble sea shells.

This striking plant is normally used for its decorative qualities, but it is edible. The plant's long leaf blades are used for wrapping zongzi (a sort of Chinese rice tamale.) In Japan, its leaves are used as an herbal tea and also used to flavor noodles and wrap rice cakes. Also used by some for medicinal purposes.

Likes moist soil and sun to shade. Root hardy to Zone 8. Only flowers in relatively frost-free areas.

Starter plants are shipped in 3" deep pots. We try to keep all of our plants between 3-8" in height with excellent root systems.

    Alpinia zerumbet.
